How We Started

A word from founder, Berna Slabber:
“Hi there!
​
My name is Berna, and I'm originally from Pretoria, South Africa. In 2007, my husband, Werner, our three children, Marguerite, Carla, and Francois, and I made the exciting decision to immigrate to the United States. We now reside in the picturesque town of Signal Mountain, just outside of Chattanooga, TN.
​
Although I have a background in accounting and auditing, with a decade of experience teaching auditing at the University of South Africa, I've always had a passion for transforming ordinary documents into works of art. From perfectly aligned columns and thoughtfully chosen fonts, to strategically placed images and graphics, I find joy in creating visually appealing designs.
​
Initially, my design journey began with meticulously crafting layout designs for company accounting records and statements. Later, it extended to creating study guides, test papers, and exam papers for auditing students.
​
Soon enough, it became a hobby, and I eagerly delved into learning various design software programs. Over the years, my dedication to perfecting my craft led me to watch countless YouTube videos, research numerous software techniques, and complete various online courses. I have expanded my skills in graphic design theory and principles, typography, color theory, and more. I furthered my knowledge through specialized online courses on software programs, branding, user interface (UI), user experience (UX) design, and the basics of HTML, print, and web design.

This newfound knowledge allowed me to create scrapbooks, birthday cards, wedding invitations, and design websites for friends and family.
​
This wealth of knowledge and experience eventually led me to create a profile on Upwork, a global freelancing platform, where I started working with clients from around the globe. As my client base grew, I realized the potential to establish SlabberDesigns.

I take great pleasure in working closely with clients, understanding their unique needs, and delivering creative solutions that surpass their expectations.
